H stands for Higgs particle.

Higgs particles, if you will.

The Higgs boson or Higgs particle is an elementary particle in the Standard Model of particle physics.

Higgs particles have not been discovered.

They're interacting with the Higgs field.

The quantum mechanical interactions of the Higgs boson causes a large renormalization of the Higgs mass and unless there is an accidental cancellation, the natural size of the Higgs mass is the greatest scale possible.

I want to know what this Higgs particle does.

And that's exactly the way the Higgs mechanism works.

Properties of the Standard Model Higgs In the Standard Model, the Higgs field consists of four components, two neutral ones and two charged component fields.

It predicts the existence of yet another new particle the Higgs boson.

Well, what the Higgs does is, it gives mass to the fundamental particles.

The analogy is that these people in a room are the Higgs particles.

The Minimal Standard Model does not predict the mass of the Higgs boson.

One explanation, the Higgs mechanism, was forwarded by the 1964 PRL symmetry breaking papers.

Now when a particle moves through the universe, it can interact with these Higgs particles.

If that picture's true, then we have to discover those Higgs particles at the LHC.

However, this was just the start what was needed for the expected discovery of the Higgs boson.

In the Standard Model, the and bosons, and the photon, are produced by the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the electroweak symmetry from SU (2) U (1) Y to U (1)em, caused by the Higgs mechanism (see also Higgs boson).

One of the main motivations for SUSY comes from the quadratically divergent contributions to the Higgs mass squared.

Supersymmetry reduces the size of the quantum corrections by having automatic cancellations between fermionic and bosonic Higgs interactions.

The Higgs, over here on the left, has a large mass and breaks the symmetry of this electroweak pattern.

The main purpose of the Large Hadron Collider is to see this Higgs particle, and we're almost certain it will.

The reason most of us are only familiar with electric charge and not both of these is because of the Higgs particle.

A particle that hasn't been seen yet, but we're pretty sure exists, is the Higgs particle, which gives masses to all these other particles.

What prevents quantities at the electroweak scale, such as the Higgs boson mass, from getting quantum corrections on the order of the Planck scale?

Since then, discoveries of the top quark (1995), the tau neutrino (2000), and more recently the Higgs boson (2013), have given further credence to the Standard Model.

The combination of the SU(2) gauge theory of the weak interaction, the electromagnetic interaction, and the Higgs mechanism is known as the Glashow Weinberg Salam model.

Higgs boson Although the weak and electromagnetic forces appear quite different to us at everyday energies, the two forces are theorized to unify as a single electroweak force at high energies.

In some theories of particle physics, even such basic structures as mass, space, and time are viewed as emergent phenomena, arising from more fundamental concepts such as the Higgs boson or strings.

And the picture is that the whole universe and that doesn't mean just space, it means me as well, and inside you the whole universe is full of something called a Higgs field.

In 1967, Pakistani Abdus Salam and American Steven Weinberg independently revised Glashow's theory by having the masses for the W particle and Z particle arise through spontaneous symmetry breaking with the Higgs mechanism.

The picture is that the electrons and the quarks in your body and in the universe that we see around us are heavy, in a sense, and massive, because they're surrounded by Higgs particles.

Fundamental bosons In the Standard Model, vector (spin 1) bosons (gluons, photons, and the W and Z bosons) mediate forces, whereas the Higgs boson (spin 0) is responsible for the intrinsic mass of particles.

As of 13 December 2011, intensive search for the Higgs boson carried out at CERN has indicated that if the particle is to be found, it seems likely to be found around 125 GeV.

Through the process of spontaneous symmetry breaking, the Higgs selects a special direction in electroweak space that causes three electroweak particles to become very heavy (the weak bosons) and one to remain massless (the photon).

In particle theory, supersymmetry is recognized as a way to stabilize the hierarchy between the unification scale and the electroweak scale (or the Higgs boson mass), and can also provide a natural dark matter candidate.

The weak interaction affects all the fermions of the Standard Model, as well as the Higgs boson neutrinos interact through gravity and the weak interaction only, and neutrinos were the original reason for the name weak force .

If it's not true because it's quite a convoluted mechanism, although it's the simplest we've been able to think of then whatever does the job of the Higgs particles we know have to turn up at the LHC.

If supersymmetry is restored at the weak scale, then the Higgs mass is related to supersymmetry breaking which can be induced from small non perturbative effects explaining the vastly different scales in the weak interactions and gravitational interactions.

The Standard Model hypothesizes a field which is responsible for this effect, called the Higgs field (symbol formula_1), which has the unusual property of a non zero amplitude in its ground state i.e., a non zero vacuum expectation value.

So there's an old idea in particle physics that this known pattern of charges, which is not very symmetric, could emerge from a more perfect pattern that gets broken similar to how the Higgs particle breaks the electroweak pattern to give electromagnetism.

As of July 2011, the precision electroweak measurements tell us that the mass of the Higgs boson is likely to be less than about at 95 confidence level (this upper limit would increase to if the lower bound of from the LEP 2 direct search is allowed for).
