Phantom is a 1922 silent film that was directed by F. W. Murnau the same year Murnau directed Nosferatu .

The movie bears the influence of Frank Capra, D. W. Griffith and F. W. Murnau.

Friedrich Wilhelm F. W. Murnau (born Friedrich Wilhelm Plumpe December 28, 1888March 11, 1931) Murnau was greatly influenced by Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, Shakespeare and Ibsen plays he had seen at the age of 12, and became a friend of director Max Reinhardt.

These included the landmark 1922 German silent film Nosferatu , directed by F. W. Murnau and featuring the first film portrayal of Dracula although names and characters were intended to mimic Dracula 's, Murnau could not obtain permission to do so from Stoker's widow, and had to alter many aspects of the film.

Reception and legacy Nosferatu brought the director Murnau reinforced into the public eye, especially since his film The Burning Acker was released a few days later.
